There’s always a new experience in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and there’s an insect tournament every last Saturday during the summer months. We’ll tell you what you need to know about insect tournaments.
When will the 2022 Insecticus Tournament take place?
Tournaments have been announced in recent days via message from Carlson on your bulletin board.
The Insecticus Tournament will always take place on the last Saturday of every month for the next four months in 2022:
- June 25, 2022
- 30 July 2022 (current date)
- 27 August 2022
- 24 September 2022
How long does the tournament last? From 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. you can talk to the chameleon Carlson in your square, where he has also set up a suitable tent. From there you start the tournament. On that day, Melinda will draw your attention to the tournament during the morning island announcement. You can still redeem points until 8pm and you can use the bug cage in the square until 5am to pack the bugs from the last round into your bag.
Special features for KK: Since Carlson runs the tournament on Saturday, there’s no more room for the KK Slider dog in the square if you’ve opened it. That’s why you can always tell him the song you want on Sundays starting at 6pm. GamePro.de shows you which ones are available here:
This is how tournaments work
Talk to Carlson: To start each tournament round, you need to talk to the chameleon. The first spin is free and from then on you have to pay 500 Sternis each time.
This is how you avoid participation fees: If you have one or more visitors on the island, then you do not have to pay 500 Sternis. Just note that the loop continues if someone arrives or leaves in the meantime.
one round way: After you start the round, a timer will appear on your screen. From now on you have three minutes to catch as many bugs as possible. Time also keeps running on the loading screen and in the menu. Therefore, stay on your island if possible and run away from the places with the most insects. After the round is complete, you must return to Carlson to collect points.
This is how points are calculated: You get one point for every bug you catch. Of the three insects there is a one-time bonus of two points. Each additional catch earns you more points. You will get about 5 to 8 points per spin. We’ll tell you how to maximize your points later in this article.
Buy insects profitably: On applicable Saturdays, you can also sell any bugs you catch during or outside the tournament at Carlson for 1.5 times the normal price. Just talk to him and he’ll be happy to buy bugs from you. You can read more about Carlson himself here:
For participating in the tournament, you will receive special items as prizes, all of which are related to insects. You can only get this gift during the event. You need a total of 130 points to get all the prizes, but there are also trophies. For this you need a total of 300 points, which is why you will get at least two to three times the remaining reward for the gold trophy.
Below is a list of all the prizes:
- butterfly wallpapers
- Hobby insect cage
- Insect Catcher Bag
- Insect Hawaiian Shirt
- insect stick
- beetle umbrella
- beetle carpet
- toy centipede
- cockroach toy
- Spider webs
- spider door sign
- butterfly backpack
- termite burrow
- Bronze Insect Trophy (with 100 points)
- Silver Insect Trophy (with 200 points)
- Golden Insect Trophy (with 300 points)
No item twice at start: Until you have received all gifts at least once, you will not receive twice. That’s why you can collect 130 points without hesitation and only then Carlson will give you duplicate items.
Tips for more points in the tournament
Unlike fishing tournaments, there are no baits to get insects faster. Therefore, you should expect that enough insects appear in three minutes. But there are some things you should generally consider in order to pocket more points in tournaments. General tips for catching insects can be found here:
- between 5 to 9 insects: 5 points cooperation
- between 10 to 14 insects: 7 points of cooperation
- of 15 insects: 10 cooperation points
The cooperation bonus is calculated on your normal points as well as your individual bonus from the three insects caught. This is the easiest and fastest way to get 300 points for gold trophy.
Familiarize yourself with which insects are in the game: Each month there is a certain selection of insects available in the game and sometimes there are months and times in which certain locations where they spawn are preferred.
Since the tournament runs from morning to 6pm, insects hanging on trees or palm trees, for example, almost fall out all the time. It is best to find almost all the butterfly species present in the game during the tournament. All the insects can be found in the full list here on GamePro.
Prepare your island to catch insects: There are certain insects that only appear if you have certain flowers on your island. For example, the Knight Butterfly only comes with hybrid flowers, whereas the Orchid Mantis, on the other hand, prefers to be in white flowers. All flowers, how to grow them correctly, crossing them with each other and what else you should consider when breeding, we show here:
Another good egg-laying point for insects is tree stumps. If you create a location on your island with a stump, then you can go there every round of the tournament and see if new insects have appeared. You can also place garbage or rotten turnips on your island to spawn flies or ants.
Stock up your inventory with landing nets: The most important tool when catching insects is the landing net, which like most tools has a certain resistance. So that you don’t use up your lap time to get new nets, you’ll need to tinker with them first and then replace them if anything breaks.
Are you looking forward to the Insecticus tournament or is something bothering you?
